SLUDGY is a swamp monster with a heart of gold, looking for friendship, but kills everything it touches due to it being made of toxic waste. Nevertheless, this doesn’t stop Sludgy from looking for new friends, whether that’s people it comes across or the animals and creatures in nature.
Seemingly forming in a polluted swamp, the origins of Sludgy are not known. It just appeared one day, trying to make friends, but poorly. As time goes on, Sludgy figures out how to interact with the animals without killing anyone (there’s some trial and error in the beginning…), but the humans never get used to the sight of a pleasant sludge monster. More often than not, humans meet their end not by Sludgy’s hand, but rather by overreacting at the sight of the monster. Running off cliffs in a frenzy, dashing into oncoming traffic, or being attacked by bears are some of the ridiculous outcomes. Sludgy does manage to make a couple of human friends over the course of the book, one being a dead guy and another one is an old blind man, lost on a walk, who gives Sludgy advice on being themself. Aside from looking for friends, Sludgy tasks itself with cleaning up leftover trash, taking in nature and generally just enjoying life and all its beauty.
Originally serialized in floppy comics, this “graphic novel” treatment is a collection of 4 published issues of Sludgy, as well as the first story that ran in Read More Comix! #5, and a heap of unreleased stories. Sludgy is the cutest horror comic you’ve ever seen, and even when
it gets dark, it’s still a book that any age can enjoy.
